Pravasi Bhartiya Divas
(Non-Resident Indian – NRI Day)( 09 Jan): This day commemorates the
return of M K Gandhi from South Africa to Mumbai (then Bombay) on 9th
January 1915.
World Hindi Day(10 Jan): The purpose is to promote the use of Hindi. This day also marks
the anniversary of the first World Hindi Conference held in 1975.
National Youth Day(12 Jan): The day commemorates the birthday of a spiritual leader we know as
Swami Vivekananda.
Indian Army Day(15 Jan): The day celebrates the Indian Army and its service for the nation.
It also commemorates Lieutenant General K. M. Cariappa becoming the first
Indian Commander-in-Chief in 1948.
Desh Prem Divas(23 Jan): This day celebrates the fervour of nationalism. It also celebrates
the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose.
The Republic Day( 26 Jan): India became a republic on this day and the Constitution
of India came into force and replaced the existing Government of India
Act, 1935.
Martyr’s Day/ Mahatma Gandhi Death Anniversary
(30 Jan): We celebrate this day to honour
those who lost their lives defending the sovereignty of India.
Martyrs Day (23 March): Indians pay homage to three martyrs who sacrificed their lives for
the country-Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru.
National Maritime Day(23 March): Indians pay homage to three martyrs who sacrificed their lives for
the country-Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev Thapar, and Shivaram Rajguru.
National Maritime Day(05 April): The day commemorates the maiden Voyage of SS Loyalty, ship of the
Scindia Steam Navigation Company. The journey was from Mumbai to UK.
National Panchayat Day ( 24 April): The day marks the passing of the Constitution (73rd Amendment)
Act, 1992 that came into force with effect from 24 April 1993.
Anti-Terrorism Day (21 May): Marks the death anniversary of Shri Rajiv Gandhi.
National Statistics Day( 29 June): The day marks the birth anniversary of eminent statistician P C
Mahalanobis. It is also meant to create a public awareness among the people
about the importance of statistics in daily life.
National Doctor’s Day(01 July): The day is to honour and celebrate the second Chief Minister
of West Bengal, Dr B C Roy. The day celebrates the medical profession and the
profession of the doctors in general.
Kargil Vijay Divas( 26 July): In memory of the Kargil War heroes who laid their lives for the
Nation.
National Sports Day(29 August): 29 August is the birth anniversary of India’s hockey legend Dhyan
Chand and is thus also celebrated as the National Sports Day.
Engineer’s Day(15 September): Commemorates the birthday of the legendary engineer Sir
Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya.
National Unity Day(31 October): Marks the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhai Patel who
was Independent India’s first Deputy Prime Minister.
Public Service Broadcasting Day(12 Nov): The day commemorates the Mahatma Gandhi’s maiden visit to All
India Radio (AIR) station in Delhi for the first and last time.
Children’s Day (14 Nov): Marks the birth anniversary of India’s first Prime Minister
Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru.
National Integration Day(19 Nov): Birth anniversary of India’s first woman Prime Minister Indira
Gandhi.
Samvidhan Diwas (Constitution Day)( 26 Nov): Commemorates the adoption of Constitution and to spread thoughts
and ideas of Dr B.R. Ambedkar.
Vijay Diwas (16 Dec): The day marks the anniversary of the win of Indian Army in
the Indo-Pak war on 16th December 1971.
National Mathematics Day( 22 Dec): The day marks the birth anniversary of great Indian Mathematician
Srinivas Ramanujan.
Good Governance Day(25 Dec): Marks the
birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.
